This is my original after-dinner cocktail inspired by a drink on the Cointreau website called the Calico Cat. I went in a sweeter, more exotic direction, with tastes of vanilla and almond, balanced with some spice from a dash of mezcal and bitters!

Black Cat in a Top Hat

  • 1 oz. Tequila Reposado

  • 1 oz. Mr. Black Coffee liqueur

  • 1/2 oz. Licor 43

  • 1/2 oz. Amaretto

  • 5-6 pumps from a Mezcal atomizer

  • 1 oz. Heavy cream (float)

  • 3-4 drops Chocolate bitters (on top)

Add the ingredients (except for the cream) to a shaker tin, add ice, and shake well. Strain into a chilled rocks glass over ice. Shake the cream in a fresh tin with a large cube, pour slowly on top of the drink, and garnish with an expressed orange peel.

A Scotty G Signature Cocktail

The Black Cat in a Top Hat can also be served up, in a chilled coupe glass! You could also mix everything together all at once, but then you would not get the white top hat effect! I also would not use Kahlua unless you prefer a sweeter drink.

Scott Gardner, shaking a mean cocktail, and looking good!

Hi, I'm Scott Gardner, your mindful mixologist. While I am not a professional bartender, I have made well over two hundred different and unique cocktails, and invented over fifteen original drinks, including my famous European Vacation, Muzetta's Waltz, and The Cherry Bella, all of which can be found in my book, Lock it, Flip it, Kick it & Shake!

Besides shaking, stirring, and sipping, I also enjoy golfing, reading, and writing. My wife and I both love animals and we have recently gotten into birding, which is a fun and rewarding hobby. And our favorite birds... The Philadelphia Eagles, of course! Go Birds!
